The “F” Words

The “F Words”

No, not those “F Words”!  Starting The Conversation believes that in learning how to master our mental fitness, and "live life well," we need to understand the impact of basic human needs on both our mental and physical wellbeing. For simplicity and ease in remembering we incorporate six "F Words" to explain these needs - Family, Fitness, Friends, Finance, Fun, and Faith.
FAMILY
FRIENDS
FITNESS
FINANCE
FUN
FAITH
Family is complicated. Even the traditional nuclear family dynamic can be hard to manage. Now, more than ever before, additional stressors may include divorce, remarriage, stepchildren, aging parents, and more. Fragmented families can lead to guilt, frustration, anger, and feeling constantly overwhelmed. Left unaddressed, these feelings can turn into a stress-related illness such as depression, heart conditions,  and even certain cancers.

Find a better balance to “living your life well” with the Starting The Conversation team and programs. Take action today for a brighter, healthier tomorrow.
You can’t choose your family, but you can choose your friends!

Everyone needs connection and fellowship with others. We all need to feel a  sense of belonging, community, and caring from others; to be part of something larger than family. A community consists of like-minded people who embrace similar values. Where family might be fragmented and complicated, friends allow us to develop an “outside” source for healthy relationships to share life’s joys and challenges with.

You don’t need to have a multitude of friends, but you do need friends who provide a strong support system through life’s ups and downs.

People with friends are people who are “living life well.”  Studies show that when we have friends we enjoy life more, and are better equipped to deal with challenges when they occur.

Starting The Conversation identifies each of the “F Words," including friends, as integral to maintaining your overall health.
Your physical body has been created to exist in harmony, integrity, and balance. Exercise, along with right eating do much to keep your internal organs and tissues working in harmony and functioning well. But there are also other types of fitness that impact your body internally.

The environment in which you live and work in, what you feed your mind, and how you manage your emotions also greatly influence your fitness level and how you can continue to "live your life well."

Starting The Conversation will help you look at more than your physical and nutritional fitness as you advance towards enhancing your life and well-being.
Maybe you’ve heard the expression “money is the root of all evil.” That might be extreme but for many, money is a terrifying subject. Money can mean security, love, power, and freedom; but it can also mean stress and pressure. How much money is enough for you, how do you earn your money, keep it, grow it, have fun with it, and how do you give it away to family, friends, and charitably upon death? Finances have a huge impact on your life, not only in terms of economics but on your health too.

Financial concerns bring added stress and pressure, yet do you tell your doctor about the money you lost in the stock market? Do you mention how your lifestyle has changed  so much when you became divorced or when your partner died? Do you tell your doctor about the creditors banging on your door? I would say, "No." Instead you tell your doctore that you cannot sleep at night, that you are having gastrointestinal problems, back, and joint pains, or that you are experiencing debilitating headaches. These symptoms are often a direct result of financial stress but your doctor never hears about them.

Starting The Conversation helps you understand the relationship between your health and your finances so you can "live your life well!"
Laughter is infectious. Fun is contagious – ‘catch’ humour, not hypertension, headaches, or hormonal imbalances. “Inject” humour into your life and “inoculate” yourself against negativity. Embracing life, "living life well,’" and having fun helps you live a longer, better, and healthier life. Laughter is like taking an internal jog – it enhances respiration and circulation, oxygenates the blood, and suppresses stress-related hormones in the brain. It activates the immune system and is a powerful antidote for stress.

Having a strong sense of self-worth, sharing your feelings with people you trust, as well as having empathy toward others and learning tolerance are all important building blocks that allow feelings of fun to take root and grow.  When you are busy hiding secrets, your worries, or living with addictions and abuse you jeopardiize not only your health, but your self-esteem, self-worth, and ability to have fun.

The Starting The Conversation team and programs will help you release negativity and embrace fun.
Faith often forms the foundation from which your belief system forms. It governs your lifestyle choices, your opinions, and how you make decisions. It acts as a filter through which all outside information passes, and becomes your lens on the world. Yet, what happens when you inherit your convictions and belief system from your parents, absorbing them without questioning them? What happens when those beliefs contradict the way you are actually living your life?

Faith can provide a strong, solid foundation for your life, or it can create ‘dis-ease,’ disharmony, and dissatisfaction that affects both your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

Starting The Conversation won’t change your belief system but will help you to understand the impact that your faith, or dismissing faith, can have on your ability to "live life well."
